Photo of the Day (on Flickr): Out of the Dark

Out of the Dark, originally uploaded by Sheila_P.

First, the good news. The super typhoon that we were gearing up for changed its course and only brought strong winds and some rain to Manila yesterday and today. Unfortunately, it targeted the northeastern part of the Philippines. Details are still sketchy as I write this, but we are hoping things won’t turn out as bad as last weekend.

This photo was taken exactly a week ago, when the power was cut off at the height of the typhoon. In a way, something positive did come out of our (literally) dark experience — we had plenty of opportunity for family bonding. We spent some time playing cards, UNO and board games while listening to our battery-powered radio. When it grew darker, we lit candles, one at a time, and told each other stories. This was shot during one of our lulls.

My husband has just gone out to check the water level at the garage and my daughter and I were left alone in the dining room. As I looked at her with the faint glow of the candle, it reminded me of the cover of Neil Gaiman’s book “Coraline”, a story about a girl who discovers a parallel world in which everything is good, well, initially, that is.
